FUE Hair Transplant: What to Expect, Step by Step

Young man examining his hair

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the most common hair transplant method today. Individual hair follicles are taken from the back of your scalp and placed where hair is thinning. Here is what the process looks like.

1. Consultation and planning

Your surgeon checks your scalp, your donor area and the pattern of your hair loss. Together you agree a hairline shape and an estimated number of grafts.

2. The procedure day

The donor area is numbed with local anaesthetic. Follicles are removed one at a time, sorted under magnification and placed at the right angle and direction so they grow naturally. Most procedures take between 5 and 8 hours.

Most patients are surprised by how calm the day feels. Many watch films or nap between stages.

3. The first two weeks

Expect mild redness and small scabs, which fall away within 10 to 14 days. Most people return to desk work within 3 to 5 days.

4. Growth and results

Transplanted hairs shed first, which is normal. New growth begins at around 3 months, and your full result usually shows between 9 and 12 months.
